Zachary Mayer

Zachary Mayer is the Manager of Mine Technical Services at Glencore’s Kidd Operations, the world’s deepest base metal mine, located in Timmins Ontario. Kidd Mine currently produces 2.25 million tonnes per year of zinc, copper and silver bearing ore from a depth of 3km below surface.
A professional mining engineer, his career began 15 years ago as a student contractor working on a development project at an Inco (now Vale) nickel mine in Sudbury, Ontario. In 2001, he graduated with a Mining Engineering degree from Laurentian University’s School of Mines and continued working for the University on a number of consulting and research projects in the areas of rapid tunneling, production simulation and mining risk assessment. Upon completion of a Masters degree in Mineral Resources Engineering, he was hired by Falconbridge (now Glencore) and worked in a variety of mine engineering roles at two nickel and copper mines in Sudbury.
In 2009 he relocated to Timmins to join Kidd Operations, and as the Manager of Mine Technical Services became accountable for all engineering, exploration and strategic planning at the operation. His recent focus has been spearheading innovative business improvement projects aimed at improving production rates from depth. The extreme depth of the mine results in numerous technical challenges, and the mine has been investing in innovative technology solutions and automation as a means to improve the reliability of metal production and to reduce operating costs. An avid international traveller, he has also been tasked with identifying improvement opportunities at other Glencore mining operations worldwide.
